Lake Weed Concerns:

There has been an unusual showing of weeds that has developed in the norther end of the lake. The lake was treated Tuesday 27th  with a heavy dose to kill the weeds. I asked Supervisor with Aquatic Control to give a synopsis from his view point. Below is his response.  Thank you, Ken Rozelle.

Four weeks ago when Jordan and I came out to the lake for the pre-season survey, we recorded hydroacoustic soundings of the treatment area(s) to calculate biovolume of vegetation to estimate timing of the first week treatment. At that time, biovolume was <4% of the treatment acreage volume. Far too low to schedule a treatment for the first treatment of the season. The observations from the first treatment of the year (2 weeks later) indicated that fine leaves pondweed was present in most areas, but at very low densities (<15% biovolume). I decided at that point in time that the next scheduled visit to the lake would be the full shoreline weed treatment. What we did not anticipate, given the persistent, cooler, overcast and rainy days was that within the next 7 days some areas would become severely overgrown and exceed 90% biovolume. All areas were treated with Aquathol K herbicide on 5/27. This treatment will control that growth as it has in the past, but similarly to past years, control does not happen overnight. It may take 7-10 days (normally) for those weeds to begin to lose integrity and drop off the surface. Moving forward, Aquatic Control’s plan will be to begin treatments during the first week of May and schedule the spring weed treatment for the second visit of the year (would be approximately May 20th give or take a few days depending on the specific day of the week treatments begin), unless weeds are observed >25% biovolume during the pre-season scouting trip, then the first treatment of the year will be the spring weed treatment. This season, we will continue to bring extra herbicide for those problem northern areas in the lake to ensure that growth remains controlled.
